The history of the PG Group dates back to 1897, when the Plate Glass Bevelling and Silvering Company was established in Cape Town. It was from this small beginning that PGSI grew, flourishing under the guidance of Morris Lubner, to be floated on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 1946. Then, in 1992, PGSI acquired the Pilkington interest to hold 100% of GSA. At that stage, all the manufacturing and processing facilities for building glass were consolidated on the Springs site. The float glass line supplies the entire South African glass industry; from the merchants and distributors of building glass, furniture and appliance manufacturers, to aluminium fabricators and manufacturers of automotive glass.

Following the unbundling and de-listing of PGSI in 1999, Glass South Africa was renamed PG Group. The operating divisions of the Group are PFG Building Glass, Shatterprufe, PG Glass, GSA, GSA Africa, Primador and Widney.
